Aston Villa announced its intention to make an official complaint with the English Premier League, after the arbitration mistake he described as “the Great”, which contributed to its 0-2 loss to Manchester United and depriving him of qualifying for the Champions League.
The match at Old Trafford was still without goals, and amid difficult circumstances on Villa after the Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was expelled, when the visiting team thought that he scored the goal of progress through Morgan Rogers, who kidnapped the ball from Manchester United goalkeeper, Altai Bindder, and scored in the net.
But the referee Thomas Bramel launched his whistle for the existence of a violation, believing that Paydend was holding the ball with both hands, which later showed that it was not true. Since the referee stopped the game before entering the goal, the assistant video referee was unable to intervene to pass the goal.
Just minutes later, Imad Diallo scored the goal of United, before Christian Eriksen added the second goal of a penalty kick in the last minutes, to lose Aston Villa, and end the season in sixth place with a goal difference only for the champions of the Champions League.
At the press conference after the meeting, Damian Vidagani, the director of football in Aston Villa, stated: “We will file a complaint. The complaint is not only about the decision, but about appointing the referee itself. It is one of the few referees in the experience of the Premier League.”
He continued: “We are not only objecting to the decision, although it is a clear mistake, but the problem is the reason for the absence of international referees in a match of this size and decisiveness.”
In turn, coach Unai Emery expressed his anger at the referee’s decisions, and said after the match: “The TV replay is very clear about the canceled goal, but we have to accept the matter. It was a mistake … and a grave mistake.”
